Shop in the Clouds
High above the small Welsh town of Llangollen at the summit of the Horseshoe Pass, sit’s the Shop in the Clouds, a part of the famous Ponderosa complex. It is said that on a clear day up here you can sometimes see forever well, perhaps not forever but certainly over some of the most spectacular views anywhere in Wales.
But when the rain rolls in off the sea some 20 miles to the north, thick clouds shroud the mountainside. Then the air is heavy with the scents of wet heather, grouse clatter on the upland slopes and disoriented sheep bleat mournfully to each other through the mist. A strange place indeed to have a shop… but then, it is no ordinary shop!
Not only is the Horsehoe Pass sometimes shrouded in cloud, it is also completely shrouded in mystery. The nearby Craig Arthur and the Pass’s very own Fynnon Collen, both parts of a very famous, legendary Arthurian battle between a Giantess and St Collen, dominate the area. But that’s not all.
The whole area is an absolute goldmine of bronze age, iron age, and industrial archaeology. Man has been very busy up on this part of the Llantysilio Mountains, with local names such as World’s End stretching back possibly thousands of years - a true guide to the awe in which this part of the world was held.
The Shop in the Clouds is located at the very summit of the spectacular Horseshoe Pass, four miles out of Llangollen. The business was set up in 1986 and sells a huge range of gifts and clothing for any occasion or just simply as souvenirs.
Though the shop is continually adding to the products on its web site, showing every single item would be impossible! If you have seen something in the shop that you would like but is not on the site please just use the ‘Contact Us’ facility and we can arrange a delivery.
And then there’s the added bonus of a personal visit. Not only have you got the stunning scenery, the mysterious atmosphere, bags of fresh, clean air and of course the sheep but there’s also the chance take refreshments at the quality Ponderosa Café.
A day out to this wonderful location will guarantee you’ll come back again and again and again……………
