Collen was a 7th century Saint who is extremely well known in Welsh myths, legends and poetry. Said to be the first abbott of Glastonbury Abbey, which seems extremely unlikely considering Somerset is some 250 miles south of Llangollen, it is more likely he was the first Abbot of a monastic settlement a little closer to home, now Valle Crucis Abbey. The site of the church is on what would have been St Collens Enclosure - Llan (enclosure) gollen (Collen) - in the 7th century.
The interior is famous for its wonderfully carved 15th century oak roof, as well as the stained glass window of St Collen himself. The churchyard contains the tomb of the Ladies of Llangollen and their maid, Mary Carryll. It also contains
the remains of one John Edwards, who was the subject of the entire Chapter
18 of Wild
Wales. Home
