Llangollen, North Wales - where Wales welcomes the World

Elisegs Pillar Elisegs Pillar is the most important Dark Age artifact in the whole of the British Isles.

Erected by Concenn, ruler of Powys in the 9th century, it was to commemorate his great grand father Eliseg, from whom the whole valley is named, who saved Powys from falling into the hands of the Saxons.

It's importance is due to the inscriptions that were placed on it.

Elisegs Pillar They are no longer visible but the antiquerian Elfyn Llwyd thankfully copied them on his tour of the area in the late 17th century.

This inscription included many names which today are associated with the Arthurian legends.

Its present position is not the original one as it was moved during restoration. It can be found next to the A542 out of Llangollen on the way to the Horseshoe pass not far from Valle Crucis Abbey.
