Victorian Trees - Victorian LlangollenPortrait of George Borrow - Victorian LlangollenThe writer and linguist, George Borrow, was your archetypal Victorian gentleman. Born in Norwich in 1803, he learned to speak Welsh by twice reading a copy of Paradise Lost in the language as a young man. From that moment on he planned a grand tour of the Principality but it took him 34 years to realise his dream.

Pencil Sharpener - Victorian Llangollene visited Llangollen during the summer of 1854 as part of this grand tour of Wales and used the town as his base for the most part. As a result, a substantial amount of the book describes the town and its inhabitants all those years ago.

River Engraving - Victorian Llangollenild Wales is widely accepted as being the first modern travel-log. Unlike his predecessors such as Pennant, Borrow described Victorian Llangollen, as well as its inhabitants, in great detail and it is fascinating to be able to visit some of these places and view the effects of the last 150 years.

bviously, there are tremendous differences between the Llangollen of Borrow and that of today but, if you read Wild Wales, you'll see that one thing hasn't changed at all - the superb scenery and special atmosphere that makes Llangollen so special.
