Elisegs Pillar - Arthurian LlangollenElisegs Pillar - Arthurian Llangollenlisegs Pillar is one of the most important memorials in our understanding of Dark Age Britain. When the famous antiquary Edward Llwyd passed this way in the 1690's, fortunately for posterity, he made a copy of the inscription found upon the pillar. The inscription is now almost illegible.

Elisegs Pillar - Arthurian LlangollenElisegs Pillar - Arthurian Llangollenhis inscription tells us that Concen set it up in memory of his great-grandfather Eliseg, thereby dating its erection to the middle of the ninth century. The inscription goes on to list the names of the ancestors of the rulers of Powys one of which was Vortigern.

Elisegs Pillar - Arthurian Llangollenis rule was marred by his alliance with the Saxons, which led to the beginning of the wars with the Saxons in which Arthur played such an important role.

Elisegs Pillar - Arthurian Llangollenortigern was finally killed for his treachery by King Arthur's father Uthyr Pendragon.
