not far from the towpath of the Llangollen Canal are the remains of a
base for a stone cross. The earliest recorded name for this cross is Croes
Gwenhwyfar by Edward Lhuyd in the 1690's.
wenhwyfar
is the original Welsh name of Gueinevere, the wife of Arthur, and she
is also linked to the area through folklore.

Gwenhwyfar is the only site that carries the name of Gwenhwyfar in Britain.
